Samsung Display seeking to broaden markets for OLED panels
Samsung Display has developed the world's first ultrahigh definition (UHD) organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display for laptops, making its foray into the premium market for IT devices.

The panel making unit of Samsung Electronics has been also active in expanding its display products for cars in a bid to diversify the OLED panel markets.

The company said its 15.6-inch UHD OLED panel offers vital features such as contrast range and the accuracy of colors for premium laptops, providing clearer pictures for those who play games, do graphic design work and watch videos.

Compared to liquid crystal display (LCD) panels, the OLED panel's blacks are 200 times darker and whites are two times brighter.

The new product maximizes convenience as it is thinner and lighter compared to LCD products.

Samsung Display has been also doubling its efforts to develop OLED technologies to expand its presence in the market for automotive OLED panels.

In 2017, the firm provided 5.7-inch OLED displays for Audi's fourth-generation A8 sedans, and supplied 7-inch OLED displays for the German carmaker's first commercial electric SUV, the e-tron, in September. The 7-inch displays are used for the virtual side-mirror system, called Virtual Exterior Mirrors.

The firm's OLED technologies were also mounted in digital cockpits for cars, jointly developed by Samsung Electronics and Harman, which was unveiled during the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas in January.

The 12.3-inch OLED dashboard mounted on the driver's seat offers information such as speed and fuel as well as music and navigation. The panel is also mounted on the central information display located in the middle of the driver's seat and the passenger seat, offering entertainment information with the Bixby service.

Samsung Display said it will continue to advance its OLED technologies to introduce various market applications.

The firm took a 92 percent market share in the small- and medium-sized OLED panel market in 2018, according to market researcher IHS Markit.

The OLED market is expected to reach $35.2 billion in 2023 from $22 billion in 2018.
