Taiwan-based Epistar has disclosed it has lowered capacity utilization rates to controal inventory level in efforst to cope with LED chip oversupply that has been hitting the global market since the fourth quarter of 2018. The LED epitaxial wafer and chip maker said the average time in turnover of inventory increased from 93 days in first-quarter 2019 to 102 days in second-quarter 2019. The largest Chinese competitor Sanan Optoelectronics saw such average inventory turnover time rise from 248 to 269 days in the same timeframe, industry sources said. In 2020, prices for LED chips for backlighting and general lighting applications are expected to remain at low levels as oversupply lingers, but LED chips for automotive displays and lighting, and mini LED chips may be in tight supply because there are few qualified suppliers, said Epistar president Fan Chih-yung. Epistar expects clients to begin adopting mini LED backlighting for high-end gaming monitors and notebooks at the end of 2019 and demand for mini LED backlighting will pick up fast in second-half 2020, Fan indicated.
